Between Rivers | Science applied to construction: a wooden auditorium will turn years of UTN research into an emblematic work
With capacity for 400 people and a total area of ??1,350 m2, the new building promoted by the UTN will respond to student growth and will host conferences, graduations and cultural events. The dean of the National Technological University (UTN) Concepción del Uruguay Regional Faculty, Martín Herlax, received the mayor José Eduardo Lauritto to review the progress of the work together. The first stage of the work is already underway on a property located in front of the Defensa Sur, land that was transferred to the university by the municipality in 2016, during the second term of Mayor José Eduardo Lauritto. The future building will have capacity for 400 people and will be intended for holding conferences, undergraduate snacks, academic events and cultural activities, responding to the sustained growth of student enrollment and strengthening the link between the university and the community. Currently, the tasks are They concentrate on the foundation stage, with the execution of the piles that will transmit the loads to the ground. Later, progress will be made with the foundation beams and the construction of the slab. From research to construction One of the most notable aspects of the project is that, once the wet work is completed, the entire structure will be assembled with wood from cultivated forests in the Mesopotamian region. The choice of this construction system is not coincidental. This is the concrete application of the scientific developments promoted by the Wood Study Group (GEMA), a research team from the UTN Concepción del Uruguay itself specialized in the resistant and elastic behavior of regional species intended for structural uses. The group is considered a national reference in the matter. In addition to providing technical advice to companies in the forestry and construction sector to optimize their products, its researchers were responsible for developing the first Argentine Regulation of Wooden Structures CIRSOC 601, a regulation that establishes the design and calculation criteria for this type of construction in the country. In this way, the new auditorium represents an emblematic case of technological transfer, since it will allow the knowledge generated within the university itself to be materialized in a large-scale work.
