The unique Galician forest that is a natural monument and that has the grandfather, an 1880 tree that you have to visit

n Natural place in Galicia surprises with the majesty of its trees and the history they hide. Among them, a centenary specimen stands as the most impressive of all.

There is a forest in Galicia where trees reach colossal dimensions, creating a landscape that leaves those who travel with breath. Inside, a particular specimen stands out on the rest for its imposing size and longevity. Its history dates back more than a century ago, when it was planted with a very different purpose from the one that makes it one of the greatest natural attractions of the region. A forest with giant trees and a centenary protagonist Enclave is the Souto da Retorta, also known as the Eucalyptal of Chavín, located in the province of Lugo, a few kilometers from Viveiro. Declared natural monument in 2000, this forest houses more than 600 eucalyptus, some of which are among the largest in Europe. The most iconic of all is the Avó, grandfather in Gallego, an eucalyptus dating from 1880 and has grown until currently 67 meters high and a perimeter of more than 10 meters. Its spectacular size makes it one of the main natural attractions of the community. The path that runs through the souto da retro is accessible and allows visitors to walk between these colossi while they follow the channel of the Landro River. The tour, approximately one kilometer, is designed to be a quiet and enriching walk, offering the opportunity to know the history of these trees. His arrival in Galicia dates back to the nineteenth century, when they were planted with the aim of draining flooded land. With the passage of time, they have gone from fulfilling a practical function to become part of the natural landscape of the region. Beyond its ecological and historical value, this forest is an ideal destination for those who seek a unique experience in Galicia. The visit ends under the imposing shadow of the Avó, where its dimensions challenge any attempt to cover it with the arms. This natural wonder, framed in an environment of great beauty, leaves an indelible mark on anyone who comes to discover its greatness.
